Buy a house or renovate current home? Los Angeles area?
We own a home in Los Angeles county and owe almost 80K on it. the Value right now is somewhere around 425K, I would like a bigger home, do we add on or should we just purchase another home and keep this as a rental. A new home would cost a min of 450K and we could rent our current place for 2K a month. the Original plan was to add on but with values dropping purchasing a second home seems like the better investment. quick note we are in our 30's and have zero dependents so really need a tax break.
If we choose to renovate how much should we spend. right now the house value is about 31/2x's what I paid for it.

Does getting help from a convicted criminal to buy your 1 million dollar home make you a man of the people?
"Obama and his wife, Michelle, bought their only home, a three-story Georgian revival house in Chicago's leafy Kenwood neighborhood, for $1.6 million in 2005. They probably could not have done that without help from Antoin Rezko, an early political patron. Rezko paid $625,000 to buy the adjoining lot from the home's owner, who wanted to sell it in a package deal. Obama later bought a narrow strip of the Rezko lot." Los Angeles Times
In June, a federal jury convicted Rezko of mail fraud, money laundering and other crimes. None of the charges related to Obama or his home.
Los Angeles Times
It looks like Obama took a favor from this guy, but when impropriety come to an issue or possible issue, he bought the lot. This stinks like the Rev. Wright issue.
