If unions serve no useful purpose, why am I making double that of a non union worker in my city?
My union dues are $69 dollars a month for ten months. I am a teacher. I don't pay union dues for July or August.
I am a union public school teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District. I will be comparing my salary and compensation package to my largest competitor, a non union school teacher with the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
First of all, I have a pension. If I teach 37 years and make top pay ($6200 per month) then I will receive a pension of $5700 per month. The private school teacher gets nothing.
Second of all, I have due process rights. After I get tenure, I can only be fired for cause, and not at will. The private school teacher can be fired for not having sex with the principal.
Third, of all, I have certain seniority rights. I can only be fired during layoff after they have fired everyone below me. Also, I have the right at my elementary school to choose which class I wish to teach based on seniority. The private school teacher has no rights to select his or her class and can be fired during budget problems at any time.
I have a Health Plan, a Dental Plan, and a Vision (Eyeglasses) plan. The private school teacher has a Health Plan that requires a very large contribution.
Top pay for a union Los Angeles Unified School District Teacher is $75,000 per year PROVIDED that teacher has ten years in AND 99 units OVER their teaching credential.
Top pay for a schoolteacher with the Catholic Archdiocese is $45,000.
